Longman & Van Grack Attorney Named Vice Chair of the ABA Section of Taxation Closely Held Businesses Committee

Longman & Van Grack Attorney Robb Longman, who is the current Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association’s (MSBA) Tax Section, has been named the Vice Chair of the American Bar Association's (ABA) Section of Taxation Closely Held Businesses Committee. The firm is thrilled that Mr. Longman is being recognized for his many years of working on tax concerns and issues, and we are proud to have Mr. Longman head our firm's Tax Law Practice.              The ABA Section of Taxation Closely Held Businesses Committee provides private practitioners and government lawyers with a forum to share their knowledge and interact on matters involving closely held businesses, including corporate planning, estate and business succession planning, state & local tax planning issues, and representation before taxing authorities. Mr. Longman's extensive background in tax law provides him with the ability to advise his clients not just on the corporate matters but the tax effects of those matters as well. Longman & Van Grack Welcomes Christopher Battista as Of Counsel

The Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC law firm of Longman & Van Grack is proud to announce a new addition to its business law, business litigation, and estate planning practices. Business law attorney Christopher Battista joins the firm as Of Counsel.                                       As an attorney with over ten years of experience in business process and risk management practicing in Virginia, Washington, DC, and New York, Chris has developed a broad-based business law practice for both public and private corporations. Chris began his legal career representing e-commerce businesses and government contractors, and Chris has developed his skills to provide the full spectrum of business legal needs in Washington, DC and Virginia. Longman & Van Grack Attorney Named U.S. Director for the Sport of Canoe Slalom

Longman & Van Grack is proud to announce that one of our attorneys, Adam Van Grack, has been elected Discipline Director for the Olympic sport of Canoe Slalom in the United States. The Slalom Director position exists through USA Canoe/Kayak, the national governing body for the Olympic sports of Canoe Sprint and Canoe Slalom. As the sport’s Discipline Director, Adam Van Grack will sit on the Board of Directors for USA Canoe/Kayak. Additionally, Adam Van Grack will be integral in all decisions regarding the Olympic sport of Canoe Slalom in the United States. Also known as Kayak Slalom or Whitewater Slalom, the Olympic sport of Canoe Slalom includes a total of four Olympic medal events and involves athletes racing down a whitewater course between gates hanging above the whitewater. Since 2009, Adam Van Grack has also been the Chairperson and President of Potomac Whitewater Racing Center (a U.S. Olympic Center of Excellence based in Bethesda, Maryland). Adam has been active within the Olympic sport of Canoe Slalom as both an athlete and administrator since 1991. Longman & Van Grack Sponsors Victims’ Rights Art Exhibit: “Finding My Own Voice”

Longman & Van Grack is proud to be a sponsors of Artist & Maker Studios' inaugural Victims’ Rights Art Exhibit in Rockville, Maryland to coincide with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in April 2016.  Longman & Van Grack regularly supports the local Washington Metropolitan Area’s art community and is also proud to help victims of crimes find their voice through art. This art exhibit titled “Finding My Own Voice” is for artists (and creatives) who are themselves survivors of crime, their families and loved ones, and the families and loved ones of victims who have not survived. Artists & Makers Studios' Executive Director, Judith HeartSong explains that this art exhibit is for these victims “to share their thoughts and feelings through art and the written word.” This exhibit, curated by Judith HeartSong, will offer the opportunity for survivors and those affected by crime to publicly share paintings, drawings, mixed media art, writings and sculpture that expresses the pain, turmoil, growth, and healing that can follow in the aftermath of violent crime – in a safe and nurturing environment. Canoe & Kayak Magazine Quotes Longman & Van Grack’s Recreation Law Advice

The Sports and Recreation Law Practice Group at Longman & Van Grack regularly provides recreation law advice to clients regarding the rights of the outdoor industry and the rights of individuals to enjoy outdoor recreation. This week, Canoe & Kayak Magazine published an article asking "Can You Be Arrested for Paddling a Flooding River?" In the recreation law article, Canoe & Kayak Magazine specifically quotes the legal advice of Longman & Van Grack attorney Adam Van Grack evaluating the laws of the State of Maryland and National Park Service (NPS) regarding the ability of the NPS to ban kayakers and canoeists from paddling the Potomac River. The article, relying on the legal advice from Adam Van Grack, ultimately concludes that the NPS cannot penalize or arrest an individual kayaker or canoeist from paddling on the flooded Potomac River.
