On May 14, 2026, Longman & Van Grack is proud to announce that Robb A. Longman was awarded the J. Ronald Shiff Memorial Pro Bono Award. The award was created to recognize the efforts and dedication of pro bono services in taxation, with special consideration given to low-income taxpayers and organizations that serve them. Mr. Longman was recognized for the services he has provided to both low-income taxpayers and the tax community.
Mr. Longman began his pro bono work by preparing tax returns for low-income individuals. He would assist in the CASH campaign, preparing tax returns so individuals entitled to refunds, child tax credits and the earned income tax credit would receive the funds they were due. He has also participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program by going to military bases to teach service members how to prepare tax returns.
Mr. Longman also organized and ran the calendar call clinic in Baltimore. The clinic assisted pro se litigants at the U.S. Tax Court on the first day, the calendar call. Mr. Longman organized attorneys and he and those attorneys provided advice to the pro se litigants regarding their cases.
In addition, over the years, Mr. Longman has represented many low-income taxpayers referred by the Maryland Volunteer Services. Mr. Longman continues to assist pro se litigants several times a year through the IRS and the American Bar Association's Tax Section Settlement Days. At these virtual events, Mr. Longman assists taxpayers nationwide by meeting with them and the Internal Revenue Service’s chief counsel to try to resolve the taxpayers’ matters. In cases where they are unable to settle, Mr. Longman advises these individuals on what evidence and information must be presented to try their case.
Mr. Longman has also provided estate planning services at no charge for military members and the Rockville City Police Department. Mr. Longman’s extensive background in business law, corporate law, and tax law provides Mr. Longman with the ability to advise his clients on all tax controversy and audit issues including Employee Retention Credits. Mr. Longman has testified before the Maryland House of Delegates on tax matters and is currently the Secretary of the American Bar Association’s Tax Section . Mr. Longman regularly works with business and individual clients on all types of corporate and business matters to help them address their legal concerns.
